About this Site
Hi my name is John and I am the maker of this website. It has definitely been no easy task to make, but it is something I have been wanting to do for a long time. I first started getting interested in companies while living in New York and having friends point to buildings and "say so-and-so company is in this building" and so forth. So first I made a website about companies in New York City www.nycskyscrapers.com. I got a Yahoo website of the week award for that, and I was like "hey this is cool stuff, why not go for the whole country". And conveniently enough I was already ready to get the hell out of New York and head back to where I came from, Portland Oregon.
So I bought this junky thousand dollar Honda and another thousand for insurance and a license loaded all my possessions into the car, and proceeded to go city by city all the way across this country. No I did not hit every single major city in every state, but I plan to do so eventually. The trip was not an easy trip. Man, trying to locate these obscure addresses and trying to cross reference them with online maps and lots of paper maps and then trying to drive to all these damn places. Man, its enough to drive one batty. But often I would get to a company and it would be worth the trip because some of these headquarters were really damn cool, worthy of awe-inspiring. Others were pretty lame and kind of a disappointment while more just looked like one more corporate American glass office building.
A lot of times I had to deal with security guards and trying to get permission to get onto some of the corporate campuses so I could see the headquarters and photograph it. That wasn't always easy and I had my fair share of run-ins with the security guards. Ugh. I'll tell you too, they didn't like it at all if they saw me gettin my camera out to take a picture. Sometimes I was screaming and shouting telling them that this is investor property and that I am an investor researcher and investors have every right to visit these companies. They on the other hand were trying to decide whether to cuff me or not. I don't know who was in the right.
In the end, the trip took about 2 months and I got about 350 major companies in addition to the 200 or so I already had from New York City and Connecticut. I still have Oregon, Washington, California, and Florida to do and a few other odds and ends.
What I have set out to do with this project is to see for myself who are these Fortune 500 and many other companies that are the engine of this country. What lies behind a name and a bunch of financial numbers. Where do all the products we consume everyday come from. I really tried to get a feel for every company that I visited. Not only would I take a photo, but I would walk into the lobby and try to get a sense of what the spirit is and the health is of this company. And now the website is my attempt to try to convey this same experience to
you.
THANKS TO...
Thank you Apple Computer and Steve Jobs for producing a wonderful powerbook G3. It gave me the freedom to move wherever I wanted and still be completely wired. Without it, I would still be in New York.
Thank you Olympus for producing an excellent camera that takes
high-res quality pictures all the time and is very intuitive to use and just overall really well designed.
Thank you Hoovers and Standard & Poors for producing informative books on the Fortune 500. Thank you in particular Hoovers. I believe in what you guys do and feel that your interest, like my own, goes beyond just the money and financials and that you guys are interested in this stuff for the fact that it is also really interesting.
Thank you Motel 6 for providing me with clean inexpensive rooms every night, and consistent and reliable service and always an internet connection. I think you guys are a great company and are going to do well in the future.
Thank you Honda for producing great cars that don't break down even though they are 10 years old and have 150,000 miles on them, (15,000 of which I added myself on this trip).
Thank you Mom and Dad for giving me a place to land after a really tough trip and providing me with a very supportive environment and the time away from all obligations so that I could make this website.
